How I Gained the Confidence to Start My Business

“Be scared, and do it anyway.”

Since opening my business, people often ask me, “How did you gain the courage to start?” and “How did you get to be so confident?”. These questions are then followed up with people telling me how much they, too, want to start an insta blog or a YouTube channel, or even open a business. So what’s holding them (and so many others) back? Fear. They’re afraid that no one will support their ideas. They’re afraid of the possible judgment and ridicule they may receive from peers. They’re afraid of failure. And I get it. In the beginning stages of anything, it can be super scary and unnerving. I mean, you are completely exposed for the world to see your passions. Who knows what someone might say?

It’s become common for us to feel like we have to play it (life) safe. We avoid taking risks, because there is danger involved. We could fail. We could be mocked. We could embarrass ourselves. The what-ifs alone are scary enough. Trust me. I know. I’ve had my fair share of moments where I let the fear of being judged prevent me from doing the things I love. Most people don’t know that for years I had the idea to create content on YouTube before I actually drew up enough courage to upload my first video. I stalled myself from starting sooner because I didn’t know what people would think about me. I wasn’t the confident me I am today.

So how did I suddenly gain the confidence to start not just my YouTube channel, but also Sweet On You Boutique? I wish there was some formula I used that could be bottled and sold at the local Target. “The Self-Con Cleaner”. Removes self-consciousness and replaces it with self-assurance, or your money back. LOL. If only! The truth is the answer is quite simple: I just did it. I made the decision to start my YouTube channel in 2015, and I started my boutique in the same way in 2019. For both situations, I was scared, but I accepted the fact that I wasn’t going to be perfect or have everything figured out at first. I accepted the fact that people may talk about what I was doing—both good and bad. Most importantly, I accepted myself. I gave myself the permission to follow my dreams, without being 100% ready. Each moment became a learning journey I was willing to take.

And now look at where it has led me. Since uploading my first YouTube video back in 2015, I have touched the lives of over 34,000 people, worked with major brands, attended events, and networked with other influential creators. Better yet, I’ve gained the confidence to pursue other dreams by continuously putting myself out there no matter what. I may get scared, but I do it anyway. With this mindset, I have the motivation to tackle on any new idea I envision, like opening Sweet On You Boutique. And furthermore, if I never took a chance on myself, I wouldn't be able to do what I love and share these stories with you!

Don’t live your life in fear. People will judge you no matter what you do. But, you can’t let that stop you from taking a chance on yourself. Be scared, and do it anyway! You’ll gain more confidence in yourself along the way. And, once you have confidence, you can do anything you set your mind to.
